This week, our focus is on holiday Scammers. I chose to shine the spotlight back on them. Phishing emails and text messages are used all year long. Thieves can steal your personal data electronically, and use skimmers in stores, gas stations, ATMs, or the cash register and more.
Holiday Scammer Awareness Tip #1: Avoid clicking on links and text messages you are unfamiliar with. Thieves use phishing tactics to lure you in and capture your personal information. Elderly people are vulnerable and often victims; please share this information with elderly people you know.
Holiday Scammer Awareness Tip #2: Thieves can steal your personal data electronically.
Remember to use secure sites for purchases. Double check Cash App, Zelle, Apple Pay, and other payments.
If the online site URL says “Not secure,” think twice before using it. Also, double-check links you receive that may look like they’re from your bank.
Holiday Scammer Awareness Tip #3 – Stop if you detect something is wrong while paying for gas or at the ATM. If you’re buying gas, pay inside or scan with your phone for payment. Go inside the bank or drive to a different ATM location for cash. Stay safe and be aware.
Holiday Scammer Awareness Tip #4: Thieves sometimes use spam calls using a local area code to entice you to answer. Avoid answering spam calls and refrain from providing personal information such as your date of birth, social security number, or account number.
Have a happy and prosperous New Year! It’s your time to thrive in 2025!
